Custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes Canada: Sustainable Packaging for Your Brand

Canadian recycling rules are changing fast. For example, on January 1, 2026, Ontario producers took full responsibility for blue box recycling. Nova Scotia and Québec have made similar shifts. So if you sell packaged goods here, your box now sits inside a system that expects clear, honest specs.

Custom Printed Paper supplies custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes Canada brands can describe with confidence. You choose the board, size, print and finish. We document each part, from recycled fibre to adhesive. Then you can label your packaging accurately in English and French.

Request a quote for custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes or ask for a sample to test the board in your own shipping lane.

What Are Custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes?

Custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes are printed paper boxes built to your dimensions, with materials picked to cut waste and support recycling. Most use recycled paperboard, natural kraft or corrugated board. Good ones avoid plastic film, foam and other parts that mixed-material sorting struggles to handle.

When you compare Custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes Canada suppliers offer, remember that “eco-friendly” is not a standard and has no fixed test. So the box itself must do the talking. Look for a spec that lists fibre source, recycled percentage, ink, coating, glue and any insert. However, if a supplier cannot give you that list, treat the claim with caution.

This page shows how to read those specs for the Canadian market. You will also find style options, costs, ordering steps and rules on environmental claims.

What Makes a Box Eco-Friendly?

A more sustainable box gets six things right. It uses recycled or certified fibre and no more board than needed. It also avoids mixed materials, and it uses inks and coatings that suit paper recycling. Finally, it carries a clear disposal message and protects the product, because a crushed product is the most wasteful outcome of all.

Recycled Content

Recycled content means fibre recovered from earlier use. Post-consumer fibre comes from items people have finished with, such as used cardboard, while pre-consumer fibre comes from manufacturing scrap. So ask for the percentage, and ask whether it is post-consumer.

A percentage matters because “recycled” alone tells you nothing. Under Canadian law, claims about a product’s environmental benefit must be based on an adequate and proper test. Therefore, a stated figure gives you something to test. Our recycled cardboard boxes come with that figure in the spec [CONFIRM].

FSC-Certified Materials

The Forest Stewardship Council certifies forest management and tracks fibre through the supply chain. You will see three label types: FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled. Each says something different about the fibre inside.

However, FSC leaves some things out. It does not certify that a box is recyclable, and it does not judge the ink or coating. So for FSC-certified custom boxes, request the certificate code. Only certified suppliers may apply the label.

Kraft Paper

Kraft paper is made by the kraft pulping process, which keeps fibres long and strong. Natural kraft stays brown because it is not bleached. That colour gives your brand an earthy look with no extra dye.

Kraft can be virgin or recycled, plain or coated, but the plain, uncoated type is usually the simplest to recycle. Our Custom Kraft Boxes come in several grades, so use custom kraft boxes when you want a natural look with a simple recycling path.

Recyclable Construction

Every part of the box affects how it recycles, including the board, glue, window, insert and finish. However, plastic windows, foam trays and metal closures are the usual trouble spots.

Simple builds win, so stick to one paper material, use water-based glue, and choose paper or pulp inserts. That is how recyclable custom boxes earn the word “recyclable” in a real blue box program.

Lower-Impact Printing

Water-based and soy-based inks work well with paper recycling. Aqueous coating adds a thin protective layer without plastic film. Film lamination is the finish to question, because it fuses plastic to paper.

Print choices also change how much ink you use. A one-colour logo on kraft needs far less ink than full coverage. Fewer inks also mean fewer places for a claim to go wrong.

Reduced Packaging Material

A snug box uses less board and often costs less to ship. Carriers price parcels by size as well as weight, so empty space is paid for twice. Send us your product’s length, width and height, and we design the box around them.

Eco-Friendly Box Materials Compared

Board typeMade fromBest forWatch out for
Natural kraft boardUnbleached kraft pulp, virgin or recycledFolding cartons, sleeves, light mailersCoatings and lamination raise recycling questions
Recycled paperboardRecovered paper fibreRetail cartons, cosmetics, supplementsLess stiff than virgin board at the same thickness
Corrugated (E- or B-flute)Wavy medium sandwiched between flat linersMailers, shippers, heavy or fragile goodsMore material per box, so right-size it

No single board is best for everyone, because your product weight, route and shelf needs decide. E-flute runs about 1.5 mm and suits mailers, while B-flute runs about 3 mm and cushions better. Damp conditions weaken uncoated paperboard, so long routes across provinces may call for corrugated.

How Canadian Recycling Programs Affect Your Box

Canada has no single national recycling system. Instead, provinces set the rules, and most now use extended producer responsibility, or EPR. Under EPR, the companies that supply packaging pay for its collection and recycling.

  • Ontario:Since January 1, 2026, producers are fully responsible for the province’s blue box program.
  • Nova Scotia:Its packaging and paper EPR program began on December 1, 2025.
  • Québec:Éco Entreprises Québec runs a modernized curbside system under full producer responsibility.
  • British Columbia:Recycle BC operates under an approved producer plan.

Corrugated cardboard and boxboard are long-standing curbside materials in these programs. Still, accepted-material lists differ by community, so check local guidance before you print a disposal message.

Recyclable, Biodegradable and Compostable: What Each Claim Needs

Three words cause the most confusion, and each needs its own proof.

Recyclable means the box can be collected, sorted and reprocessed where your customers live. Name the parts too, because a recyclable box with a glued-on plastic window is a mixed case.

Biodegradable describes a process, not an outcome. Without a time frame and conditions, the word says little. The Competition Bureau expects environmental claims to be clear and specific, so avoid it unless you can back it up.

Compostable depends on the facility, and green bin acceptance of compostable packaging differs by municipality. So if you offer compostable custom packaging boxes, state where they can be composted.

For most paper boxes, then, recyclable is the stronger and simpler claim.

Green Claims Under Canada’s Competition Act

Canada added specific greenwashing rules to the Competition Act on June 20, 2024. Two matter for packaging. Claims about a product’s environmental benefit must rest on an adequate and proper test. Claims about a business or its activities need adequate and proper substantiation.

Rules have shifted since, however. On March 26, 2026, the Budget 2025 Implementation Act, No. 1 received Royal Assent. It dropped the rule that certain claims follow an internationally recognized method. The duty to substantiate stayed. The Competition Bureau says it will update its guidance to match.

Use this table before you print a claim:

ClaimEvidence to hold on fileSafer wording
RecycledSupplier’s recycled-content percentage“Made with X% recycled fibre”
RecyclableFull parts list and local program acceptance“Recyclable in most Canadian blue box programs. Check locally.”
FSC-certifiedCertificate code and label type“FSC Mix, licence code shown”
CompostableCertification and named facility type“Commercial composting only”
Plastic-freeMaterial list for board, coating, glue and insertName the parts that contain no plastic

So avoid “100% eco-friendly,” “zero waste” and “carbon neutral” unless you hold the evidence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Bilingual Labelling and Box Design

Boxes sold in Canada often need both English and French. The Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act requires some details, such as product identity and net quantity, in both languages on prepackaged consumer goods. Québec’s Charter of the French Language adds its own rules. Confirm what applies to your product category.

Design for it early. French text is often longer than English, so leave space on the dieline. Recycling labels need care too. How2Recycle labels in Canada follow Competition Bureau guidance. The program also redesigned its Check Locally label with French and English side by side.

Send us your label copy, and we will check the fit before proofing.

How to Choose the Right Eco-Friendly Box

Ask five questions in order:

  1. How heavy and fragile is the product?
  2. Will it ship by parcel or sit on a shelf?
  3. How far will it travel, and in what weather?
  4. How much print coverage do you need?
  5. What disposal claim can you support?

Your answers point to a board. For example, heavy parcels lean toward corrugated, while shelf products lean toward paperboard. Natural-look brands, meanwhile, lean toward uncoated kraft.

How Custom Sustainable Packaging Supports Branding

A bilingual, plainly worded box is easier for buyers to trust. A kraft mailer with a single-colour logo looks confident. It also avoids the overclaiming that draws regulator attention.

You can also add a short disposal line next to your logo, such as “Flatten and recycle with cardboard.” Clear steps turn your box into a helpful brand touchpoint.

How Much Do Custom Eco-Friendly Mailer Boxes Cost?

Price is driven by these factors:

  • Larger runs spread die and plate costs across more boxes.
  • Size and board.Bigger boxes and stronger board use more material.
  • Print method.Digital suits short runs. Offset suits large runs.
  • Foil, embossing and lamination add steps.
  • Inserts and windows.Paper inserts add material and assembly.
  • Distance and box volume shape freight costs.

Offset Print

If you’re looking for large-volume packaging materials, choose offset printing! This printing method produces clean, crisp, and brilliant results. It uses plates to transfer ink to paper, so it is economical for printing in bulk. The process provides accurate color, professional quality, and an outstanding look and feel, which is ideal for cutting custom box designs.

Digital Print

Digital printing works well for short runs and quick turn times. It doesn’t use printing plates, but instead prints directly from a computer file. It is cheap for small amounts and gives good resolution. It’s ideal for custom designs, variable data or limited edition packaging that requires speed and flexibility.

UV Print

UV printing is a process that uses ultraviolet light to dry and cure the ink as it is printed. It easily operates on traditional and non-traditional materials. This process adds to the visual appeal of such packages, as well as their durability, and packages that require a combination of both texture and shine are perfect candidates for such execution.

Pantone

Pantone printing is based on a standardized color matching system to guarantee an exact color match between jobs. It’s great for keeping brand colors perfect. Pantone ink is mixed using Pantone formula guides developed through spot printing for color accuracy that is reported as second to none. For luxury packaging that demands trustworthy, uniform, and sumptuous color from the start.

C1S

C1S is an acronym for “Coated One Side,” as the paperboard is glossy on one side and uncoated on the reverse. It is wonderful in packaging where you need a printed, high-end, printable side outside, and you may want the inside to be writable or matte. Perfect for handcraft, small business and so on, ideal for packaging boxes, shelves, product tags with a polished look.

C2S

C2S, which stands for “Coated Two Sides”, has a smooth and shiny coating on both sides of the paperboard. This is why it is ideal for stunning full-color printing, regardless of whether you are an individual or a company. Retail packaging, brochures, and cosmetics boxes that require a high-quality, high-gloss finish both inside and out use C2S.

White Kraft

White Kraft is similar to traditional Kraft, but with a printable white surface. It features a crisp white surface that produces sharp and clear prints, making it perfect for high-quality images. This is a material commonly used to manufacture sustainable packaging, which is required to have attractive prints for a professional brand image.

Kraft Paper

Kraft paper is natural brown and unbleached. Thai material is derived from wood pulp and is recyclable. Companies that want to attract eco-conscious consumers prefer Kraft material. It has a rough texture, which is perfect for handcrafted items for a rustic look and protective packaging.

Coated Kraft (CCK)

This paper is brown Kraft with a smooth, white clay-coated surface that enhances the appearance of whatever you print on it. It offers a sleek look that is ideal for graphics, prints and text branding. This hybrid design is perfect for packaging that requires both sustainability and sharp visual branding.

Color Woodfree

Color Woodfree paper has a smooth dyed surface that is free of wood fibres, for a clean finish. It is typically acid-free, and both image and color remain crisp. Ideal for presentation packaging, greeting cards, and custom box lining, where a consistent, solid color and luxurious finish are needed.

CCNB

CCNB (Clay Coated News Backboard) is made from recycled paper and has a clay-coated white backing for printing. The back remains gray or brown, preserving its eco-friendly nature. It is a very cost-effective substrate and is used extensively in folding cartons, retail packaging, and food service boxes, where low printing costs and moderate strength are the primary concerns.

Black Cardboard

Black cardstock is 100% black for a rich look that is both professional and elegant. It’s rigid and robust. It creates exceptional luxury product boxes and helps in premium branding. The materials’ smooth and matte surface is suitable for foil stamping and other premium finishes to add class and quality.

Glossy Lamination

Glossy lamination is used to give a shiny surface to the custom boxes. This coating is also an excellent option to protect the material from scratches. If you want to give your boxes a professional finish and protection from scratches, then gloss lamination is an ideal option. The high quality of the lamination protects the packaging material from moisture and enhances its longevity.

Matte Lamination

The covering is a matte lamination to give a smooth surface with a non-glossy finish, with a premium feeling. It can lower glare and has a soothing quality to particular colors. This finish is frequently used when a modern, subtle appearance is required and a sound, protective barrier is necessary to help resist smudging, light scratching and light abrasion while still offering the look of natural wood grain.

Soft Touch Lamination

The velvet-like feel makes it soft to the touch, lamination and creates an amazing tactile sensation. The surface feels good and is easy to hold. It increases tactile interaction and reinforces a brand message with elegant visuals, yet it is still durable; resists moisture, wear, and. damage during handling.

Anti-scratch Lamination

Anti-scratch lamination resists scratches, prevents scratches, and reduces the visibility of scratches. It holds up better with dust. This finish is also excellent for packaging applications in which the item needs to be kept in prime condition via handling and shipping, and for the retail shelf, where resistance to wear and durability are a must for on-shelf appearance and quality control.

UV Varnishing

UV Varnishing is a high-gloss coating that adds depth and appeal to the printed image. Cured with Ultraviolet light to be hard and ready to use. This process creates a very distinctive, eye-catching appearance and provides additional protection. It also has the added benefit of hiding light scratches, fingerprints and dirt.

Machine Varnishing

Machine varnishing provides the packaging with an even finish that is applied during production. It beautifies your surfaces and lasts up to 15 years. Its finish is consistently good on large runs, and provides for good smoothness, clarity, and slight gloss increase as well as improved resistance to minor wear and dulling over time.

Calendering Varnishing

Varnishing calendering is the process that gives gloss and smoothness with heat and pressure. It also helps to crisp up printed detail and feels more professional. This process enhances details and gives an inviting feel to the printed product for premium quality presentation packaging.

Water-Base finishing

Water-based coating offers a protective and environmentally safe coating that is also strong and long-lasting. It provides a matt/natural or gloss/soft gloss finish effect without being applied using hazardous materials. This option is perfect for companies that value environmental consciousness and are in need of a smooth surface that is reflective as well as protective.

Water Base Ink

Ecologically friendly water-based ink that is non-toxic and gentle on skin. It is suitable for different kinds of printing processes, including superior carton printing quality.

Soy Ink

Soy ink is manufactured with soybeans and is sustainable in nature. This ink has the ability to give vibrant colors and impactful designs that give your custom printed boxes an alluring look. It has a much smaller carbon footprint as compared to petroleum-based inks.

Fluorescent Ink

Fluorescent ink gives designs that glow under UV light and create a catchy design. This ink is ideal for special effects, as well as for producing prints that pop. It is commonly used in posters, labels, signs and other marketing materials which must be read easily in a variety of conditions.

Oil Base Ink

This kind of ink uses petroleum and is becoming popular simply because it is durable and of high-quality color. Exhibiting excellent print resolution and high-standard graphics quality. Oil-based ink gives perfect quality images, especially on porous surfaces that are otherwise hard to print. But it has a greater environmental impact in terms of its chemistry.

Foil Stamping

In foil stamping, heat is used to transfer ink to the surface. You can get matte to gloss and holographic images on your packaging. Foil stamping outshines your packaging among the other brands and gives a high-end look to your product.

Spot UV / Spot Gloss

In spot UV, a polished layer is applied to specific areas of packaging. This is an ideal option to build contrast and textures. If you want to accentuate your logo and other designs, then spot UV is a good option.

Blind Embossing

A blind emboss is an image that is pressed into the paper or card without the use of ink or foil. It has a raised or recessed quality, which makes the material look elegant and refined. This velvet touch lamination is commonly used on branding or invites, adding a tactile feel to the design.

Blind Debossing

Blind debossing is a form of blind embossing as you create a depressed image into the material, instead of an embossed one. It’s commonly used for soft branding or high-end packaging and returns a smooth and sophisticated feel to your designs.

Stamping Embossing

Embossing stamping combines stamping and embossing to produce a raised pattern or logo. It adds an ink stamp or foil technique decoration, great for luxury business cards, invitation cards, and packaging details, both textured and detailed.

Flocking

Flocking is the act of adhering small fibers to the surface of an article of fabric or other material. This process allows for the printed material to have a soft hand and be slightly indented into the product it is printed on, and is typically reserved for greeting cards, packaging or limited garment decoration. It creates a lush feel and lavish touch.

Textured Embossing

Emboss textures are a raised or indented pattern in a graphic, giving an elegant look for print. The effect is typically used for branding and to add detail to designs in things like invites, business cards or packaging, but also gives a tactile and visual boost.

Glittering

What is glittering? They love that it makes people look and feel sparkling. It is frequently used in advertising as well as in sales promotions, in packages, in decorative items, on toys, and other products to increase its liveliness and attract attention. It’s great for holiday or special occasion patterns.
